ADAGIO, 1990, for chamber orchestra
Commissioned by the ORT Orchestra della Toscana
Publisher: Ricordi, 1990 | Duration: 6 min.

”Adagio” is a chorale for chamber orchestra which takes its inspiration from the very unusual opening of the ”Dissonance Quartet” K. 456 by Mozart. The daring harmonic style and unusual chromatic development in the opening 22 bars of the Quartet serve as the basic material for this slowly ”growing” composition.
The chord formation opening the Quartet (C, A flat and A natural) concludes this composition in an orchestral climax, where all of a sudden, the tutti almost disappears leaving a shadow of the opening harmony played in random order by a small group.
