Presenze describes a situation in which musical ”fragments” of diverse origin and character appear, approach each other, sum up and then disappear. As if they were mechanical instruments, each performer plays his particular limited melody and repeats it, always with slight variations. Most of the fragments which appear in the second movement quote Arabic and Israeli folk melodies, as well as a quotation from the beginning of Luciano Berio’s ”Folk Songs”.
Presenze was commissioned by the ”Fromm Music Foundation” and was dedicated to Luciano Berio for his 60th Birthday.
In 1999 the composer extended some sections of Presenze into a large symphonic piece Merkavo’t.
